The Global Commitment of Skål International’s Tourism Sustainability Committee (2024–2025)

In a world that increasingly demands responsibility and collective awareness, the Tourism Sustainability Committee of Skål International stands as a beacon of action, commitment, and hope.

Throughout 2024–2025, this committee has intensified its efforts to prove that sustainability is not an empty word, but a way of life that must guide our decisions, policies, and everyday actions.

A volunteer team with global purpose

Each member of the committee works voluntarily and selflessly, contributing time, expertise, and passion for a tourism industry that is fairer, more inclusive, and respectful. Their dedication is not only admirable, it is essential to move toward a tourism model that values social, environmental, and human dimensions, not just economic ones.

Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards

A cornerstone of the committee’s work is the annual Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards, which have gained international prestige and attract an increasing number of outstanding project submissions. These awards honor initiatives that promote:

  • The eradication of poverty and hunger in local communities.

  • Access to free and global medical care.

  • Universal education without discrimination based on gender, religion, or origin.

  • Gender equality across all levels of the tourism sector.

  • Universal access to clean drinking water.

  • The promotion of clean and renewable energy.

  • Advocacy for decent and dignified work for all tourism workers.

  • Protection of animal welfare and sustainable fishing practices.

Flagship projects

Among the committee’s most impactful initiatives are:

  • World Reforestation Map: a global tree-planting effort to combat deforestation and wildfires, restoring life and hope to affected communities.

  • Sustainable Champions: a program encouraging clubs and Skålegas to adopt sustainable practices in their daily operations.

  • Catalogs of Sustainable Actions: regular publications offering practical tools to integrate sustainability into everyday life.

  • Ongoing training: workshops, seminars, and educational resources to empower members with key sustainability knowledge.

A better future for all

Skål International’s Tourism Sustainability Committee works tirelessly to make tourism a transformative force. Its vision is clear: a more livable, just, and balanced world for future generations, where resources are managed wisely, animal welfare is standard, and tourism respects both people and the planet.

This committee proves that through tourism, we can build a better world, with passion, integrity, and a deep belief that sustainability is not just the future of tourism, but the future of life itself.
