The 83rd Skål International Annual World Congress: A celebration of friendship and global tourism in Izmir, Türkiye

The 83rd Skål International Annual World Congress took place from 16-21 October 2024 in the beautiful city of Izmir, Türkiye.
With over 300 participants from more than 40 countries, the congress was a vibrant melting pot of cultures, camaraderie, and global tourism business opportunities.
Members from around the world, both familiar faces and new, gathered in the spirit of Skål International to exchange ideas, form partnerships, and embrace the renowned Turkish hospitality.
Izmir, a city steeped in history and culture, provided the perfect setting. Known for its scenic waterfront, historical sites, and rich traditions, Izmir’s charm made it an unforgettable host city for Skål International members. The congress allowed attendees to enjoy the vibrant city while strengthening connections within the Skål International community.
16 October | Get-Together Party
The event officially began on 16 October with the Get-Together Party at the İzmir Historical Coal Gas Factory, a venue steeped in industrial heritage that has been transformed into a modern cultural space. Attendees were welcomed with open arms, setting the tone for a congress filled with unity and positivity. Under the open sky, members enjoyed live DJ performances, dancing, and the chance to reconnect or meet for the first time, marking a lively start to the congress.
17 October | Opening Ceremony
On 17 October, attendees gathered for the highly anticipated Opening Ceremony at the Ahmet Adnan Saygun Art Center, located in the Hatay district of Izmir. Named after the esteemed Turkish composer, this art center is a prominent cultural landmark in Izmir. The event was marked by the colorful Flag Parade showcasing the nations represented at the Congress. This year, for the first time, the Executive Board members and the Senior Auditor participated by carrying their country’s flag, while the Skål International flag was proudly carried by a representative from the General Secretariat, adding a personal touch to the parade and enhancing the sense of global unity. During the opening ceremony, President Annette Cárdenas delivered a speech highlighting the core values and purpose of the organization, emphasizing the importance of friendship, unity, commitment and engagement.

Mr. Alfred Fortes, Director of Tourism at Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Skål International Awards. These awards celebrate outstanding contributions within the Skål International community and recognize members' achievements.
Sustainable Tourism Awards
The Sustainable Tourism Awards, presented by Director Jose Luis Quintero, honored eight winners who were celebrated on stage for their contributions to sustainable tourism practices.
Membership Development Campaign Awards
Following this, Director Asuman Tariman presented the Membership Development Campaign Awards. Skål International Clubs with significant growth in membership were recognized, including:

In recognition of his contributions to the Skål International Movement and elevating the organisation to new heights.
Adding an inspirational note to the ceremony, keynote speaker Mehmet Nane, Past-President of IATA, shared his insights on the future of global tourism and aviation. His talk covered essential industry trends, including the impact of AI and technology, and provided an optimistic outlook for the aviation sector.
The event concluded with a captivating Turkish folk dance performance, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and adding a local flavor to the congress’s celebratory atmosphere.
17 October | Urla Lunch & Tour
Following the unforgettable Opening Ceremony, delegates gathered for a scenic lunch at Urla Sahne, a unique venue known for its breathtaking views and ambiance. Located in the picturesque town of Urla, this space provided an ideal setting for Skål International members to enjoy delicious Turkish dishes while savoring the fresh coastal air.
During this gathering, Skål International witnessed a momentous Twinning Ceremony, strengthening bonds between Skål International İzmir and Skål International Rome, Skål International Cape Town and Skål International Izmir, and a new connection between Skål International Cape West Coast and Skål International Chennai. Many members then took a guided tour through Urla Village, immersing themselves in the charm and heritage of this quaint locale.
18 October | Annual General Assembly & Izmir Tour
The following day, 18 October, delegates and non-delegates alike engaged in a range of activities. Non-delegates embarked on the Izmir Old City and Agora Walking Tour, where they explored iconic landmarks such as Konak Square with its historical clock tower, Kızlarağası Hanı’s Turkish Coffee Street, and the captivating Agora Open Air Museum. Meanwhile, delegates convened for the Annual General Assembly, discussing essential association matters, announcement of elections, and ratification of Skål International Cusco, Peru, as the host of the 2025 World Congress, and Skål International Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, approved as the host for 2026.
19 October | Global Market Place, B2B & Workshops
Responding to members’ requests for more business-oriented sessions, the congress introduced the Global Market Place, B2B, and Workshops on 19 October. Representatives from different countries engaged in meaningful B2B exchanges, where Skål International members and local businesses —including Aspire Zone Foundation, the international congress sponsor— connected to explore new opportunities.
Over lunch, attendees enjoyed an insightful keynote address by Kamel Badawy, Business Management & Intelligence Director of Aspire Zone Foundation, who spoke on 'The Importance of Sports and Medical Tourism'. Following this, a panel session delved into key issues facing the industry today, with discussions on AI, sustainability, and climate change. Moderated by Stefan Pettersson from Stockholm, the panel featured Annette Cárdenas, President of Skål International (Panama); Maureen Ogola (Nairobi); Moritz Freise (Berlin); and William Oh (Seoul).
The afternoon offered a variety of engaging workshops:
'Young Professionals – Our Future', presented by Gonzalo Novelo (Skål International Merida, Mexico).
'Sustainability', led by Director José Luis Quintero and Committee members.
'Membership Development' with insights from Director Asuman Tariman.
Hüseyin Baraner shared strategies for involving local residents in tourism, especially in the face of over-tourism challenges.
Director Olukemi Soetan, along with Advocacy, Global Partnerships & Trade Shows Committee members, and Kemal Oral, CEO of Elektraweb, presented on AI solutions for sustainable hotel management.
To conclude the day’s Skål International Business activities, the evening culminated in the Global Market Place Dinner, featuring a vibrant street food concept with different food and beverage stations, as well as a DJ performance that kept the energy high.
20 October | Cesme and Ilica Tour & President's Gala Dinner
On 20 October, participants had the opportunity to visit the coastal towns of Cesme and Ilica. Cesme, with its stunning beaches, historical sites, and lively markets, offered a warm welcome. Guests enjoyed lunch at the elegant Ilica Hotel, where the beautiful surroundings provided a relaxing atmosphere and a perfect opportunity to bond with fellow members.
The final night of the congress, the President’s Gala Dinner, was held at the Swissotel Smyrna Halls. This elegant event brought together all attendees in their finest attire for a grand finale, with special guests including:

During the dinner, the Skål International Izmir Local Organising Committee was applauded for their dedication and meticulous organisation. President Annette Cárdenas presented special gifts to Past-Presidents Hülya Aslantas, Salih Cene, and Burcin Turkkan, recognizing their invaluable support. The General Secretariat team was also honored for their hard work and commitment throughout the year.
As per tradition, the chain ceremony took place, with chains presented to the newly elected Vice President and Directors, and the symbolic handover from the outgoing President to the incoming President.
The highlight of the evening was a delightful surprise—a special 90th birthday cake presentation, which brought joy and excitement to the celebration and created a truly unforgettable moment for everyone in attendance.
Live music accompanied the entire dinner, inviting guests to the dance floor and creating a lively yet elegant ambiance that echoed the camaraderie and unity that define Skål International. This memorable celebration of friendship and learning was a fitting conclusion to the congress.
Pre, Congress-day & Post Tours
Another point that needs to be mentioned is the optional tours that enriched the Congress, showcasing Türkiye’s diverse cultural and historical treasures. With one Pre tour, seven congress-day tours, and one Post tour, Skål International members were treated to an immersive experience in some of Türkiye’s most iconic locations.
Pre-Congress Tour (Oct 13-16): Istanbul, Troy, Pergamon, and Izmir where attendes were introduced to Türkiye’s UNESCO heritage sites, culinary delights, and vibrant local traditions.
Ephesus & House of Virgin Mary Tours (Oct 15, 16, 21): Guided tours through ancient ruins and historical wonders.
Opening Day Ephesus & Urla Tour (Oct 17): Where members explored the Köstem Olive Oil Museum and Urla Art Street.
Kemeraltı Old City Tour (Oct 18): guided walking tour of İzmir’s charming old city, including a visit to the historic Agora.
Vineyard Tour (Oct 19): a day of wine-tasting, savoring the flavors of Urla’s eco-tourism vineyards.
Çeşme & Alaçatı Tour (Oct 20): This nature and gastronomy tour attracted members, with lunch at the Ilıca Hotel Resort.
Post-Congress Cappadocia Tour (Oct 21-24): In breathtaking Cappadocia, members experienced unique highlights such as hot air balloon rides and traditional Turkish entertainment.
The 83rd Skål International World Congress in Izmir was a resounding success, capturing the essence of Skål through friendship, professional growth, and cultural appreciation.
